The rainy season, which is a time of year that frequently elicits conflicting emotions, might bring on feelings of sadness and depression. The persistent pattern of rains, the gloomy clouds, and the chilly air may all contribute to a calming and sombre environment. The dark mood that frequently accompanies the rainy season  and some effective techniques to help you deal will be explored in this article.

Literally speaking, during monsoons, the sky is frequently covered in thick, black clouds that block off the sun’s beams. The lack of sunshine has a significant impact on how individuals feel. Serotonin is known to elevate our mood and promotes feelings of serenity and focus. Sunlight stimulates the synthesis of this hormone. Our serotonin levels might fall when there is little sunshine, resulting in feelings of sorrow and sluggishness which only adds to the known gloominess associated with the rain.

Sound may also add to the dismal atmosphere. While some people enjoy the sound of raindrops falling, for others, it might serve as a continual reminder of the weather outside. The constant, repetitive sound might evoke emotions like sadness, loneliness, hopelessness and more.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that not everyone experiences the melancholy of the rainy season. The rainy season may be a period of quiet and reflection for certain people. The ability to stay indoors is a welcome respite from the stress of daily life, as is the sound of rain and the cold air which may very well be calming more than discomforting for some. It is important to understand that dispositions and responses differ from person to person and  need to be understood as more closely associated with personality rather than an intrinsic characteristic of the season.

Regardless of one’s own views on rain,  the season may occasionally be unpredictable and come with a number of additional challenges including those related to travel, disruption of daily activities, illness and more. So, here are some suggestions for overcoming low moods during the rainy season:

1. Embrace the season: Try to embrace the rainy season rather than resisting it. Rain revitalises the environment by restoring water supplies and feeding vegetation. Try and spend some time of your day actually admiring its qualities. Allow your senses to ground you as you consciously take in the wet earth’s smell, the sound of the raindrops hitting the ground, and the sight of the lush, green surroundings.

2. Stay active: Exercise has been shown to improve mood. There are several workouts you can do even if the weather prevents outside activity. Your heart rate is likely to be increased, and endorphins, known as the body’s natural mood enhancers, are released through yoga, dance, home workouts, or even simple household chores.

3. Continue to Eat Well: A well-rounded diet can have a significant impact on your mood. Foods high in minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins can help you feel more energised and fight fatigue. Warm, soothing preparations during the rains like the famous Indian fritters or ‘pakoras’, soups as well as hot beverages like tea, coffee and hot chocolate can definitely help.

4. Stay social: Making connections with people might help lift your spirits. Social engagement can give people the motivation they need, whether it is through a phone call, a video chat, or a warm indoor gathering.

5. Engage in Indoor hobbies: Rainy Weather is the ideal time to play indoor games. Hobbies, whether they involve reading, drawing, cooking, or playing an instrument, can bring some respite when otherwise contained and unable to step out.

6. Practice mindfulness: Deep breathing techniques or meditation can help you deal with anxiety and stress, which are frequently linked to bad weather. You can develop a sense of tranquillity and patience by concentrating on the here and now. Those who have never practised meditation may try to begin with referring to youtube videos or mental health apps like the LetsGetHappi app where access to such videos and tutorials is made easy.

7. Create a Cosy Environment: The melancholy of the rainy season can be lessened by creating a warm and cosy environment. Put on some relaxing music, light some candles, and cover yourself in a warm blanket.

8. Maintain a Regular Sleep Schedule: Lack of sunshine might interfere with your circadian rhythm. To make sure you’re receiving adequate rest, try to have a regular sleep routine. A few practical examples of how this may work includes taking a warm shower before bedtime, disengaging from all electrical devices in the bedroom like TVs, laptops, and smartphones; and avoiding consuming drinks like coffee and alcohol as well as heavy meals.

There are times when the persistent clouds, relentless puddles, and lack of sunlight cause us to feel down or lethargic. But it’s vital to keep in mind that each season has its own special charm, and there are ways  to cheer yourself up during the downpour. Though the rainy season might occasionally cause melancholic feelings, it’s crucial to keep in mind that it’s a normal aspect of existence. You may use some of these suggestions to make the monsoon a time for leisure, rejuvenation, and personal development by embracing it. Always keep in mind that there is a bright side to every situation and that every drop of rain symbolises a fresh start.

To note: Mental health professionals can provide more specific and personal guidance, support and treatment.

Should you continue to notice yourself experiencing low moods and depressed feelings that may or may not only be season specific, please remember that there is no shame in seeking help.
